Hallam Sinfonia is once again collaborating with our old friends Hallam Choral Society (HCS), with whom we last worked in last year’s Mahler 2 at City Hall. The concert takes place at St Mark’s Broomhill on Saturday 23 November at 7.30pm.
This concert is dedicated by HCS to the memory of a former member who when he died left them a legacy in his will. In recognition of this, the main work is Mozart’s wonderful Requiem. The whole programme has a reflective flavour, with the other choral work being the Ave Maris Stella by contemporary British composer Cecilia McDowall.
The programme also includes two string works performed by Hallam Sinfonia. More Mozart comes in the shape of his dramatic Adagio and Fugue in C minor, written at the end of his life, while the final work is the beautiful Adagio by Guillaume Lekeu, a real find. This Belgian composer, whom none of us had heard of, lived from 1870 to 1894, dying tragically young of typhoid after eating a contaminated sorbet.
We are very much looking forward to supporting HCS again in this lovely programme, an attractive mix of the familiar and the unfamiliar and with a distinct touch of melancholy. We hope you will join us there!
You can book tickets for the concert here, or they will be available on the door.
