The Hallam Sinfonia concert on 19 October will be the last that John Pullin, our tuba player, will play in before his well deserved retirement. After many years of sterling service not only to Hallam Sinfonia but many other musical groups he is hanging up his faithful Tuba "Eloise" and taking more time to relax in his favourite holiday haunts.
John started playing a brass instrument at the age of 11 and progressed to become principal E flat bass player with the National Youth Brass Band as well as playing with the National Youth Orchestra under Muir Matheson. Following that he attended Goldsmiths College in London where he played in several important productions also doubling trombone in 'Elastic band'.
John's notable achievements since then include: Barnum at the Lyceum, winning many prizes and taking part in high quality recordings as a member of Championship brass bands, and being a founder member of the renowned Harlequin Brass. One particular highlight was the ' Queen' concert at the City Hall with Hallam Sinfonia.
Our principal trombone player, Andrew Knowles, says this of John:
"I have known and played alongside John for over 40 years in Orchestras, Brass Bands and Harlequin Brass. His musical range, ability and knowledge of the repertoire has always been held in very high regard by his peers. He will be much missed from the Sheffield music scene but I am sure I speak for everyone when I say thanks for everything John; enjoy your retirement! We hope to see you in the pub very soon to chat over a pint of excellent beer and laugh about old times."
